Mugshot Monday – “Sweet Star Tribune with tremendous horizontal squeeze" mug w/ no coffee.

I’m not sure when I’ll get back to posting Mugshot Mondays – still kinda distracted by the accident and the events afterward. So, I thought I would post this picture I took a couple of weeks ago of some old Star Tribune coffee mugs.

And the photo does not do this mug justice, so I shot a quick video:

That is an awesome horizontal squeeze job.

I’ll check on the date of issue, but the mugs (there are 3 of them!) belonged to Joel Kramer, who is my boss at MinnPost and a former editor at Star Tribune.

You can actually own these mugs!! These mugs and some other Star Tribune promotional stuff is being silent-auctioned off at MinnRoast, our annual MinnPost charity event. I won’t make it to the event, unfortunately – I’ll be home with the kids, who are healing really well. Hoping to get back to “normal” as soon as we can.

Update: I should clarify a few things about this post after reading some twitterers who could not understand why they (or anyone) would want to own this mug.

Two thoughts:

First, let me say plainly that this is the dumbest Star Tribune mug I’ve ever seen. And that’s usually how I feel when I use the word ‘sweet’ when describing something. Why is it dumb? Everyone knows you never resize a logo disproportionally. And I don’t think it would be possible to bend that Star Tribune logo anymore than it is. And even if that was okay, you can’t even read the logo without rotating the entire mug 270 degrees. It’s just a totally ridiculous mug.

Second, why would I suggest someone might want to own this mug? I was joking. But hang on now. Maybe you would want an item that actually got past all the nazi brand management requirements the Star Tribune has in place? This might be like owning the upside-down airplane stamp. A mistake-product that made it to the outside world. Well, the rare stamp analogy is a reach, but you get what I’m saying.
