In April 2010, an accident left our 2 and 5-year old sons, Milo and Sam, with burns when a pot of boiling water fell from the stove. Milo received 1st and 2nd degree burns on his belly and hand. Fortunately his burns healed within a few weeks and did not require surgery. Sam, however, received 2nd and 3rd degree burns to both of his feet. His injuries were severe and did require skin graft surgery.
While Sam recovered from his burns and his surgery, we noticed that Lego projects helped him deal with the pain better than any of the painkillers he was prescribed. Legos became our “secret weapon” with Sam – it kept his mind so busy, distracted him from the intense pain, and helped pass the time until he could walk again nearly a month later. Friends and relatives heard about this and started sending Sam more and more Lego projects to keep him busy. It helped so much.
Sam eventually made a full recovery and is excelling at soccer and karate now. He is currently a Green Belt and has kicked through several boards with his bare foot! The care he received at HCMC was exceptional. We are truly grateful.
We wanted to help other kids in the HCMC Burn Unit by telling them Sam’s secret – how Lego projects helped him when he was healing. Friends and family wanted to help too. So we all pitched in, raised $345 and bought 25 Lego projects to donate to the HCMC burn unit in the Fall of 2012.
On Friday November 9, 2012 we delivered the Lego projects to the HCMC Burn Unit. Two cameras from local television stations showed up to record the event. This video includes those two clips as well as some more info about the project. It was a really positive experience for the family and the HCMC staff. We’re thankful to everyone who helped with this.
