Oh that\u2019s right, I made a bunch of way over-the-top predictions at the end of 2009 for the MN Media Market in 2010.\u00a0 They were pretty aggressive, and not much happened this year, so I\u2019m guessing they were all wrong.\u00a0 Let\u2019s check:<\/p>\n

Prediction!\u00a0 <\/em>MPR drops the Q from their NewsQ<\/a> branding effort, goes back to being regular MPR News.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Well that one came true, but that was a gimme.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Prediction!\u00a0 <\/em>By the end of the year, two or three reporters at out-state Minnesota media outlets start blogs that out-perform their publications (and the blogs get monetized!).<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Hmmmm\u2026\u00a0 Can someone help me check this?\u00a0 Probably didn\u2019t happen, but I\u2019m really into the twitter streams of several individual out-state reporters who are doing great work.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Prediction!\u00a0 <\/em>A third of news outlets in the state cut back on their full AP contract or back out of it entirely.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Super aggressive, but this shoe is going to for sure drop, maybe even this year.<\/p>\n

Prediction!\u00a0 <\/strong>Minnpost<\/a> gets mentioned on the Nieman Journalism Lab<\/a> at least three times, but also runs out of money and \u201creorganizes\u201d to much fewer staff.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Minnpost did get their mentions<\/a>, of course, but they\u2019ve actually been hiring more staff (good moves by giving Sparber more space to write and hiring Kaeti Hinck) and expanding offices, so more wrong than right on that one. \u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n

Prediction!\u00a0 Under their new publisher, Mike Sweeney, the STrib<\/a> undergoes a major digital overhaul \u2014 they relaunch their website with a new layout, hire at least a dozen more digital staff, try to produce more multi-media, and drop at least 3 days of delivery \u2014 but miss out on the fundamentals of the web and ends the year at -30% operating expenses or more and puts their downtown land back on the auction block.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Well, this was also super aggressive, but there were a bunch of digital hires throughout the year and there are rumblings of a big redesign happening in early 2011 (those could also just be rumblings).\u00a0 The finances eased up a bit<\/a> in post-bankrupcy, there\u2019s still delivery, and we\u2019ll see what happens with the metrodome situation.\u00a0 So, mostly wrong\u2026 or just a year too early?<\/p>\n

Prediction!\u00a0 Village Voice<\/a> higher-ups realize they can\u2019t keep up with print costs, but can\u2019t make it on CPM advertising alone, so they either sell or close City Pages<\/a>.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

The smart prediction would\u2019ve been for the shrinkage, which happened, but City Pages hasn\u2019t been sold or closed.\u00a0 So, wrong.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Prediction!\u00a0 <\/em>MSP Communications announces it will \u201cbegin to phase out\u201d MSP Magazine<\/a>.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Nope.\u00a0 This was a pot-odds prediction, but it didn\u2019t hit.\u00a0 Don\u2019t be surprised if it happens this year, though. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Prediction!\u00a0 <\/strong>This is a big one – one of the local TV stations will stop doing news broadcasts before the year is over.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Nope.\u00a0 Another pot-odds prediction. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Prediction!\u00a0 Traffic to local mobile sites doubles while local sales of mobile increase 10-25% because it won\u2019t be until 3Q of 2011 that the surviving outlets figure out how to sell mobile.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Can someone also help me with this one?<\/p>\n

Prediction!\u00a0 <\/strong>LOL\/OMG<\/a> becomes the next big thing.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Wow.\u00a0 I did a lot better than I would\u2019ve guessed.\u00a0 I\u2019ll have a beer or two today and do my 2011 picks, stay tuned.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

This is a reblog so I remember to buy Mediation<\/a> a beer. Why? Because he was wrong about MinnPost<\/a> in his predictions, and that’s worth celebrating.<\/p>\n

I remember reading that prediction when he posted it<\/a>, and my reaction was honestly, “Who knows what will happen?” MinnPost was doing well, but we couldn’t take anything for granted. It’s a tough gig in the world of journalism these days.<\/p>\n

Well, today I can say we made it through the recession, membership is growing, we’re hiring, we’re expanding into bigger office space, and ad sales are picking up. Like I said, it’s worth celebrating!<\/p>\n
