Astronaut Chris Hadfield\u2019s transmissions from space<\/strong><\/p>\n

Couple of cool facts about astronaut Chris Hadfield, the commander of the International Space Station who\u2019s been Tweeting<\/a>, Reddit-ing<\/a>, and YouTube-ing<\/a> from space:<\/p>\n

1) The idea<\/a> to go behind the scenes with social media was hatched 3 years ago at the Hadfield family dinner table \u2014 the Hadfields were trying to figure out how to generate interest for the Canadian Space Agency, which is facing major budget cuts. Hadfield wanted<\/a> is \u201cto help people connect the real side of what an astronaut\u2019s life is \u2013 not just the glamour and science, but also the day-to-day activities.\u201d<\/p>\n

2) Hadfield does the posting and responding himself, but Hadfield\u2019s son, Evan<\/a>, is his unpaid assistant, doing most of the maintenance work: \u201cI make it so that he can simply float up to the computer and post without wasting any of his valuable time.\u201d (I love his Twitter bio<\/a>: \u201cInternet janitor\u201d) Evan also fed his dad tips about what was going on down on Earth, so he could snap photos.<\/p>\n

3) When he gets back<\/a>: \u201cHe\u2019s gonna land on Earth, he\u2019s probably gonna vomit on himself, and then he\u2019s going to pass out. That\u2019s what happens when you come back from space.\u201d<\/p>\n

I love this quote from Canada\u2019s first man in space, Marc Garneau, who said he wished he\u2019d had social media during his flights:<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cYou need that feeling that you haven\u2019t been abandoned up there. You need to feel that there are a whole bunch of people on the ground that are watching over you,\u201d he said. \u201cI think the connection is much stronger now because [Hadfield] has all these people who are tweeting to him and he\u2019s tweeting to them.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
