Had a great conversation with a friend. We were talking about the \u201cgatekeepers\u201d in American society, and how those who don\u2019t fit inside the box are ostracized.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Which led me to mention that I love how the original hip-hop artists defied convention, wrote their own rules. Self-determined, they managed to totally flip the music industry\u2019s script. When they were dismissed by the major record labels, they established their own cottage industy. And just look where hip-hop is now<\/em>.<\/p>\n

My friend agreed and started singing the Black Sheep song in this hot Kia commercial. You know, the head-banging song with this hook, You can deal with this, or you can deal with that?<\/em><\/p>\n

The song\u2019s actual title is \u201cThe Choice is Yours.\u201d It\u2019s obviously not the first hip-hop classic that\u2019s been used in mainstream advertising \u2026 but it\u2019s always <\/em>nice when one of these funky old-school cuts is dusted off and introduced to a new and wider audience.<\/p>\n

The early hip-hop closet is bursting at the seams with great songs just like this. But hey, don\u2019t tell Madison Avenue, okay?<\/p>\n
